W Club
You can letter in three categories; Performing Arts, Academic, and Sports. Academic Letters are given through the National Honors Society, Music Letters are from our directors, and Sport letters through your coach.
Westby’s W Club is a club that’s composed of anyone who has earned a letter through their extracurricular achievement. Former Athletic Director, Mr. Andy Hulst, described it as, “A club made up of letter winners from extra curricular activities. It’s just a way to recognize those kids that are active in the school in sports mainly. Outside of homecoming recognition there is not a lot more to it. These kids do get recognized as seniors at awards night and receive a plaque if they lettered 4 or more times in their HS careers, and it also helps get them recognition for possible scholarships from the Norse Fund.”
You can letter in three categories; Performing Arts, Academic, and Sports. Academic Letters are given through the National Honors Society, Music Letters are from our directors, and Sport letters through your coach. Your coach, director, or advisor typically awards letters based on a point system. For example, in Music you get awarded more points for things like being a section leader, doing a Class A piece for Solo Ensemble, being in honors band, etc. While sports counts points for practices and other things.
Westby’s W Club doesn’t do much now besides a yearbook photo, and Westby Alumni Marlin Levendoski says they didn’t do much 50 years ago either. If you had a sports letter you’d have the responsibility of selling concessions during games. He fondly remembers their lounge room beside the concession stand, “During a study hall you’d be able to access the room and you could do homework, hangout with your friends, whatever. And oftentimes you’d get found by a coach and get put to work. Now at the time there weren’t many female sports. They had gymnastics and track, but that space was still mostly men. The young women understandably didn’t want to associate with us. But yeah, that room was a fun privilege that we got.”
W Club is for anyone who is in possession of a letter. If you have questions about letter points, feel free to ask your instructor!
